From Landlord to Transformative Community: How Faith and Perseverance Turned My Real Estate Dreams into Reality

Investing in real estate can be a thrilling ride. Just like a roller coaster, it has incredible highs and unexpected lows. My journey began back in 1995 when I first became a landlord. This story is about resilience, faith, and the power of perseverance. It reflects growth, loss, and eventually, a renewed sense of purpose.
Over the course of 20 years, I managed over 40 rental units. Along the way, I faced both triumphs and setbacks, such as the dissolution of partnerships and a difficult divorce. By 2015, I found myself charting this new course alone.
Slow and Steady: A New Beginning
During the start of my solo journey, I was careful and often hesitated to act. Procrastination overshadowed many of my decisions. The years from 2016 to 2020 brought the joy of my children's graduation from high school. Thereafter, watching them navigate young adulthood while being mindful of what empty nesting would look like for me.
I clearly remember taking a 401(k) loan to invest in renovations. It was a bold step for me. I told myself that if I faced challenges, I had faith that I would be taken care of. Thankfully, that faith has been rewarded.
Divine Intervention
My name is Kim and I say it stands for Keep It Moving. I never gave myself much time to wallow in my sorrows. But periodically random thoughts would appear. One day I thought, "We were supposed to be real estate moguls." It was a moment of divine realization when I felt a gentle reminder that my dreams were still possible. God replied, "You still can be"! That encouragement motivated me to harness my faith and renew my commitment to achieving those dreams.
In 2024, I divested the last two of my twelve rental properties. Shifting my focus to my home, I recognized its potential as both a sanctuary and an asset. My five-bedroom, five-bathroom house became not only a place to live but also a means to generate wealth.
Turning My House into a Triplex
In 2021, I took a leap and decided to convert my basement into a cozy Airbnb. This project not only opened my home to diverse families but also marked the beginning of a journey filled with unexpected joy.
The following year, I hosted a live-in roommate. What started as a short-term solution turned into a three-month stay that was mutually beneficial. Her presence allowed me to fund a deck construction, creating a private entrance for the upper level. By 2023, the first rental space was ready to welcome guests!
Expanding the Vision
Every year, my vision expanded further. In 2024, I took on another ambitious project: transforming a 1,400-square-foot workshop in my backyard into a livable space. This allowed me to maximize the potential of my property.
To date, I have welcomed over 15 families for short-term rentals outside of platforms like Airbnb, along with maintaining two major Airbnb listings that can accommodate 10 to 12 guests comfortably. Not only have these ventures generated income, but they have also created a space filled with memories and joy with over 100 reviews and hundreds served (maybe even over 1000 if you include the massive party the young man snuck in on me in 2024 ha ha ha).
The Garden Metaphor
This planting season held a special meaning for me, mirroring my journey. The garden was planted just before Easter when time felt limited. As I considered postponing, I felt a nudge to finish what I started. God said, "You will receive a 100% harvest of the 0 you put in the ground". That resonated with me. Following through led to unexpected blessings, both literally and figuratively.

Moving Forward
My next big goal is to develop the 5.5 acres next door. This new venture excites me and builds on the lessons from my past experiences.
Out of faith, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace change, I have recognized that my real estate journey is more than just managing properties. It’s about nurturing family, a community and discovering potential in unexpected places.
Embracing New Opportunities
The shift from landlord to transforming my home and community has been a journey filled with challenges and triumphs. It showcases the strength of resilience, faith, and the willingness to adapt. Whether you are starting or facing difficulties in your real estate path, hold on to faith and see your dreams unfold. Sometimes, success isn’t just about planting seeds; it’s about believing that they will one day thrive into something remarkable.
May your journey be filled with growth and inspiration as you pursue your dreams in real estate!
